TANF Work Activities - Oklahoma

Adults in families receiving Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) are required to participate in work activities after being approved for cash assistance.

Types of Work Activities

·               Unsubsidized employment.

·               Subsidized private-sector employment. (See: TANF Work Supplementation Program.)

·               Subsidized public-sector employment.

·               Work experience.

·               On-the-job training.

·               Job-search and job-readiness assistance for up to six weeks.

·               Vocational education.

·               Job-skills training directly related to employment.

·               Education directly related to employment for a recipient who has not received a high school degree or certificate of high school equivalency.

·               Secondary school or course of study leading to a GED.

Minimum Hours of Work Activities

All families, which include single parents with children, both adults with deprivation based on incapacity, and all Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) applicants, are required to participate a minimum of 30 hours per week of work activities:

In two-parent families one adult is required to be engaged in work activities at least 35 hours per week and the other adult must meet the all-family requirement of 30 hours per week. If one parent is an ineligible alien the other parent must participate 35 hours a week.

Special Rules and Limitations

A single custodial parent who has not attained 20 years of age and has not completed high school is determined to be in a work activity for a month in a fiscal year if the recipient maintains satisfactory attendance at a secondary school or the equivalent during the month.

A single custodial parent with a child under the age of three months is not required to participate in a work activity. The recipient can use this special rule for a lifetime period not to exceed 12 months.
