Unearned Income - Spouse

Your spouse's unearned income is all income except that from wages, salary, or self-employment. It includes such income as gifts, interest, pension payments, SSDI benefits and veterans payments.

Never count your spouse's SSI benefit as unearned income. (If you both receive SSI and live together, your SSI benefit is computed as a couple -- so your spouse's "share" should not be included as unearned income.)

For SSI recipients: If both you and your spouse are SSI recipients, your combined SSI check is reduced one dollar for each dollar of unearned income you and your spouse have after the first $20 General Income Exclusion. However, SSA does not count some unearned income when deciding whether to reduce your SSI cash benefit. Not counted are Food Stamps, Housing subsidies and any State benefits that you may receive because you have low income. See SSI Unearned Income Exclusions for more information on the types of income that are not counted.

If you are an SSI recipient and your spouse is not, then your spouse's unearned income may affect how much of your spouse's income is deemed to you. This Basic version of WorkWORLD does not calculate deemed income. If your spouse's income should change, then you will have to check with your SSA Claims Representative to see what affect, if any, your spouse's changing income has on the amount deemed to you.
