SD Personal Assistance Services (PAS) - Freedom to Work Project

Freedom to Work Personal Assistance Services (PAS) are an extension of the current Medicaid PAS. The Freedom to Work PAS is administered by the South Dakota Division of Rehabilitation Services.

These services will allow individuals who are eligible for personal care services in the home to also access these services in the work place.

NOTE: Personal Assistance Services are not to replace an employer's accommodation responsibilities as specified in the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).

Eligibility

In order to qualify, an individual must:

·      Be a Medicaid recipient;

·      Complete an assessment to determine need for service;

·      Be competitively employed for at least (40) forty hours per month; and

·      Be 18 to 64 years of age.

Services

Examples of tasks allowed under this program at the workplace include:

·      Assisting with routine bowel and bladder care;

·      Dressing;

·      Assistance with meal preparation;

·      Repositioning;

·      Assisting with range-of-motion exercises;

·      Assisting with medication;

·      Providing non-routine or short duration services, such as taking temperature, dressing changes and transfers;

·      Contacting employer on behalf of consumer if the consumer's disability prevents him/her from doing so; and

·      Nursing Services.
