The South Dakota Division of Rehabilitation Services (DRS) provides individualized services to any person whose disability significantly interferes with getting or keeping a job and who needs vocational rehabilitation services to overcome these barriers to employment.
During the application process, a rehabilitation counselor assesses your disability, employment history, and your unique interests, strengths, and abilities. When the assessment is complete you and your counselor will identify and agree on an employment goal and a detailed plan of services to achieve that goal. The plan, known as an Individualized Plan for Employment, will outline who pays for each service.
· Vocational Counseling;
· Work Skills (may be provided on-the-job, through supported employment, at a vocational technical school, or at a college or university);
· Personal Support Services (may include sign language interpreters, readers, job coaches, personal attendants or note takers);
· Job Site Accommodations (may involve purchasing special equipment or redesigning a work area for an employer);
· Medical Services (medical services such as artificial limbs, hearing aids, wheelchairs, or corrective surgery may be needed before an individual can obtain work;
· Job Placement; and
· Employer Services (free technical assistance about how best to accommodate individual workers with disabilities).
Some services are based upon your economic need and the availability of other sources of funding, such as health insurance, Federal grants, or benefits. Except as otherwise provided by law or as specified in the state plan agreement with the Federal government, the following rehabilitation services are provided based upon economic need:
· Physical and mental restoration;
· Transportation, for any purpose except when determining the person's eligibility for vocational rehabilitation services and the nature and extent of the services necessary;
· Occupational licenses, tools, equipment, and initial stocks and supplies, excluding computers and computer-related devices needed to overcome a disability-related impediment to employment;
· Maintenance for any purpose except when determining the person's eligibility for vocational rehabilitation services and the nature and extent of the services necessary;
· Training books and materials; and
· Tuition and fees for participating in postsecondary academic training programs under the Federal Student Financial Assistance Program.
Frequently, eligibility for services is determined on the day of application. You can speed up the application process by coming to the office with medical information concerning your disability and how it affects your ability to work. The time it takes to reach your employment goal depends upon your individual needs.
