MassHealth Eligibility - Family Size

The Division of Medical Assistance (DMA) looks at family size and the income of all members of the family to decide eligibility for MassHealth.

NOTE: You will receive MassHealth Standard coverage regardless of your family size and family countable income if you are eligible for a Supplemental Security Income (SSI) cash benefit or a SSI work incentive called 1619(b).

In deciding family size, DMA counts parents (natural, step, and adoptive) and their children under the age of 19 who live with them. If neither parent is living at home, a family group may be children under the age of 19 and a caretaker relative who is not their parent who are all living together. DMA also counts an unborn child as a member of the family. If an applicant is married and has no children under age 19, the individual and spouse are counted. A caretaker relative may choose whether or not to be part of the family.
