Massachusetts residents who are seeking information about housing for low-and moderate-income for families and individuals have a variety of options through the Department of Housing and Community Development (DHCD) and its partners. Most housing in Massachusetts is rented or sold through the private real estate market. However, there are numerous agencies and organizations that provide lower-cost, subsidized housing for those who cannot afford market-rate rents or home prices.
NOTES: DHCD has information on-line about obtaining housing assistance in Massachusetts at:
http://www.mass.gov/dhcd/publications/howto.htm.
The regulations governing DHCD programs are available on-line in HTML format at:

DHCD's home page is at:

There are different types of low-cost housing such as public housing, subsidized rental housing, and homeownership opportunities for low income, first-time homebuyers. Many of these housing units are subsidized by the Federal government, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, or non-profit or community organizations.
DHCD, through the Division of Public Housing and Rental Assistance, oversees all state-aided public and private housing programs for low and moderate-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities.
NOTE: WorkWORLD can calculate eligibility and benefit levels for Section 8 programs. After completing questions concerning SSI/DI, answer YES to the question, "Do you want WorkWORLD to calculate results for Section 8 Housing in this situation?"
Certain veterans and their spouses are entitled to property tax exemptions if the property is occupied as the veteran's or the surviving spouse’s domicile. See the Veterans' Services - Property Tax Exemptions - Massachusetts topic for additional details.
