Homelessness - Resources in Massachusetts

A variety of resources are available to people who are at risk for homelessness or are already homeless.

Homelessness Intercept Program (HIP)

The Homelessness Intercept Program (HIP) is available to individuals who are at risk of becoming homeless. The HIP is administered by local non-profit agencies in communities throughout Massachusetts. The HIP may be able to help individuals avoid homelessness by providing direct payment assistance with overdue utility bills or overdue rent, or providing a mediator to work with individuals and landlords to resolve disputes. For more information, contact the Department of Housing and Community Development at (617) 727-7765.

Emergency Shelter

If an individual is already homeless, the nearest Department of Transitional Assistance (DTA) office may provide assistance. DTA will determine eligibility for temporary assistance or emergency shelter. HIP providers can also help with the search for housing and help individuals become stabilized once they have found housing.
