Division of Public Housing and Rental Assistance - Massachusetts

The Division of Public Housing and Rental Assistance maintains administrative oversight of all state-aided public and private housing programs that address the housing needs of low and moderate-income families, the elderly, and people with disabilities.

The Division is comprised of:

·      The Bureau of Asset Management, which oversees and regulates the day-to-day operations of the local housing authorities that manage the Elderly Low-Income Housing Program, the Family Low-Income Housing Program, and Housing for People with Special Needs;

·      The Bureau of Housing Development and Construction, which assists local housing authorities to modernize public housing developments;

·      The Bureau of State Rental Assistance Programs, which oversees the Massachusetts Rental Voucher Program , the Alternative Housing Voucher Program, and the Section 8 Housing Program; and

·      The Bureau of Federal Rental Assistance, which administers Section 8 Housing funds that do not get distributed to the local housing authorities by operating its own program as well as programs operated through regional non-profit organizations. This Bureau also administers voucher assistance for the homeless.
