Applicants to the Family Independence Program (FIP) must complete a written application and submit it to the local South Carolina Department of Social Services (SCDSS). The application may be obtained from any DSS office, or it may be downloaded from the Internet.
Applicants are informed about eligibility standards, the requirement to provide regular income verification to SCDSS, and the need to re-determine eligibility every 12 months.
If the application is approved, assistance begins on the date of approval if that date falls in the same month as the month of application or on the first day of the month in which the 30th day from receipt of an application falls.
A list of each local county DSS office, with contact information and directions to its location may be found at:
http://www.state.sc.us/dss/counties.html
The DSS application form for the Family Independence Program, Food Stamp Program, and other DSS Assistance is available online for download in PDF format (requires Adobe Acrobat Reader). Both English and Spanish language versions are available.
