Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN) - Overview - South Carolina

Logo of South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special NeedsThe South Carolina Department of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN) in conjunction with its statewide network of local Disabilities and Special Needs (DSN) Boards is the state agency that plans, develops, coordinates, and funds services for South Carolinians with the following severe, lifelong disabilities:

·      mental retardation and related disabilities

·      autism

·      traumatic brain injury

·      spinal cord injury and similar disabilities

The Disabilities and Special Needs (DSN) Board in your county is the entry point for all services funded by DDSN, with the exception of services for people with traumatic brain injury and spinal cord injury. If you or a family member have a disability resulting from traumatic brain injury or spinal cord injury or both, or a similar disability, you should contact the Head and Spinal Cord Injury (HASCI) Division Information and Referral Service at 1-866-867-3864 in Columbia, to be screened for referral to DDSN's Head and Spinal Cord Injury (HASCI) Division.

DDSN provides Individual/Family Support Services, Day Services for Adults, Day Services for Children, Residential Services, and coordinates other services with a variety of community-based service providers throughout South Carolina.

DDSN services emphasize a person-centered approach in all aspects of service planning and delivery. The focus is on identifying each person’s needs and preferences rather than trying to fit individuals into programs.

This approach gives consumers and their families the power to set goals and develop a plan that identifies the services and supports they want and need and to make choices about who will provide these services. Planning builds on an individual’s strengths, interests and talents, and it targets assistance to achieve specific results in the person’s life. Consumers and others evaluate the plan and the services and supports delivered in terms of actual results produced and how satisfied he or she is with the supports provided.
