DE Veteran's Benefits - Overview

Elements included in the coat of arms include: The Wheat Sheaf (was adapted from the Sussex County seal and signifies the agricultural vitality of Delaware); The Ship (a symbol of New Castle County's ship building industry and Delaware's extensive coastal commerce); The Corn (taken from the Kent County seal and also symbolizes the agricultural basis of Delaware's economy); The Farmer (with the hoe represents the central role of farming to the state); The Militiaman (with his musket recognizes the crucial role of the citizen-soldier to the maintenance of American liberties); The Ox (represents the importance of animal husbandry to the state economy); The Water ([above the Ox] stands for the Delaware River, the main stay of the state's commerce and transportation); and The Motto ([Liberty and Independence] was derived from the Order of Cincinnati, and approved in 1847).The Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs (DCVA) advises and assists veterans, their dependents, and survivors about eligibility for benefits and entitlements related to education, employment, health, and financial support authorized under current Federal and State laws. Delaware state veterans services include substance abuse counseling, family and individual counseling, transportation, and medical services, among other benefits, such as:

·      Taxable Income Deductions

·      State Employment - Veterans Preference

And other benefits such as:

·      Affirmative Action

·      Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery Eligibility

·      Educational Benefits for Children of Deceased Veterans

·      Educational Benefits for Active Members of the Delaware National Guard

·      Free Death Certificates

·      Hunting, Trapping, and Fishing License Fee Exemptions

·      No Charge Notary Services

·      Pension Benefits for Paraplegic Veterans

·      Exemptions for Registration and Inspection of Motor Vehicles

·      Special License Plates

·      Veterans Outreach Program

Eligibility for the various benefits differs in accordance with the severity of the disability and the dates of service. (Some benefits are available only to those who served during times of military conflict.)
