Conditional Benefits for SSI and State Supplementary Assistance - Iowa

"Conditional benefits" is an exception by which persons who are otherwise eligible but have excess resources may still receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and State Supplementary Assistance benefits while they are trying to sell non-liquid resources (that is, resources that can not readily be converted to cash). Note that the benefits will have to be repaid after the resources have been sold.

To be granted conditional benefits, you must:

·        Have liquid resources less than 300 percent of the SSI benefit for either a single person or for a married couple.

·        Agree to dispose of the resource for fair market value. You must sign an agreement to sell personal property within three months and real property within nine months. You must sign form 470-2909, Agreement to Sell Excess Property, at the time of the interview. Your spouse, guardian, representative, sponsor or parent can sign for you.

·        Agree to repay the State Supplementary Assistance received during the conditional period. To do this, you must sign form 470-2835, State Supplementary Assistance Agreement to Repay Conditional Benefits.

·           When Conditional Benefits Begin and End.
