WorkWORLD Speech - Overview

WorkWORLD contains its own built-in dedicated screen reader program, which provides structured text-to-speech functions for all of the main program screen features. The integral screen reader provides audible navigation, data entry, and results information, as well as user cues for all sections of the main screen and associated pop-up windows. It is designed to be used in conjunction with a user's generic screen reader software (such as JAWS for Windows, by Freedom Scientific) for seamless operation.

The speech functions may be easily turned on or off as desired. By default, they are turned on. You may choose between three voices when using the speech engine, one female (the default) and two male voices.

With the screen reader operation programmed in, there is no need for you to develop or maintain a complex script to control the operation of a generic screen reader in order to use the basic functions of WorkWORLD. You will need a Windows screen reader to listen to the WorkWORLD Help and Information system, which appears on screen in a separate window controlled by a help engine program that is part of the Windows operating system.

All speech features may be controlled by using either your computer's mouse, the keyboard alone, or any combination of the two. Keystrokes have been chosen to avoid conflict with JAWS for Windows.

The speech feature of WorkWORLD installs Microsoft SAPI 5 on your computer. It will not replace or disable earlier versions of SAPI that may already be installed, and is designed to coexist peacefully with them. Your computer must have a sound card that is supported by Microsoft SAPI 5. Not all sound cards or sound devices are supported by SAPI 5, even if the operating system supports them otherwise. Contact your sound card's manufacturer for further information about compatibility.
