To meet the eligibility requirements for the WIC Program, applicants must have income at or below an income level or standard set by the State agency or be determined automatically income-eligible based on participation in certain programs.
To be eligible for WIC on the basis of income, applicants' gross income (i.e., before taxes are withheld) must fall at or below 185 percent of the U.S. Poverty Income Guidelines. The WIC current guidelines and guidelines for previous years are shown in the tables below.
While most States use the maximum guidelines, States may set lower income limit standards (as low as 100 percent of the Poverty Guidelines). A person or certain family members who participate in other benefits programs such as the Food Stamp Program, Medicaid, or Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) automatically meet the income eligibility requirement.
These Federal income guidelines are adjusted annually, and WIC State agencies must implement the new guidelines by July 1 of each year. However, WIC State agencies may implement the revised income guidelines earlier, at the same time States implement revised income eligibility guidelines for the Medicaid Program.
Certain applicants can be determined income-eligible for WIC based on their participation in certain programs. These include individuals:
· eligible to receive Food Stamps, Medicaid, for Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF, formerly known as AFDC, Aid to Families with Dependent Children),
· in which certain family members are eligible to receive Medicaid or TANF, or
· at State agency option, individuals that are eligible to participate in certain other State-administered programs.
In the tables below, note that there are separate guidelines for Alaska and Hawaii. In all cases, a pregnant woman counts as two when determining household size.

NOTE: Delayed publication of 2010 Federal Poverty Guidelines.
WIC Policy Memorandum 2010-9, dated August 3, 2010 noted that the updated 2010 Poverty Guidelines issued August 3, 2010, by the Department of Health and Human Services were the same as the 2009 poverty guideline figures and did not represent a change in Income Eligibility Guidelines (IEGs) for the WIC Program. Therefore, in making income eligibility determinations for WIC applicants, State and local agencies continued to utilize the 2009-2010 IEGs, which remained in place through June 30, 2011.
