VA Auxiliary Grant Payment Levels

If you are an Auxiliary Grant (AG) recipient and a recipient of Supplemental Security Income (SSI), then Virginia supplements your SSI cash benefit with an AG benefit. If you have no other income, then the combined SSI cash benefit and AG Payment is enough:

(1) to pay an Assisted Living Facility or Adult Foster Care home the AG Rate for room, board and services; and

(2) to give you a Personal Allowance that you can decide how to spend (what we will call your "spendable income").

For AG recipients who receive an SSI cash benefit and have no countable income, the maximum AG Payment is the full amount listed at: SSI State Supplement - Virginia.

If you do have other income, then your combined SSI cash benefit and AG payment is decreased by the countable amount of your income. (Your SSI check decreases first, and then if it goes to zero, your AG payment decreases.)

If you are an AG recipient with too much income to be eligible for SSI (but not too much to be income-eligible for AG), then the Department of Social Services (DSS) gives you an AG Payment that when added to your countable income is enough both to pay the facility and to give you a personal allowance.

In both cases in which you have countable income (with or without SSI), your spendable income is at least as high as your Personal Allowance amount, and in most cases will be higher.

See Auxiliary Grants and Employment for an explanation and examples of how earnings can affect AG payments and the income available to AG recipients to spend.

For information about the relationship between AG Payment Levels and income-eligibility for Auxiliary Grants, see AG Income Eligibility.
