VA Auxiliary Grant Personal Allowance

Recipients of Auxiliary Grants (AGs) receive monthly payments from the Virginia Department of Social Services (DSS). Recipients who also receive Supplemental Security Income (SSI), and who have no other income, receive the full SSI Federal Benefit Rate (FBR) and the full AG Payment Amount.

AG recipients turn over most of the SSI and AG to their Assisted Living Facility or Adult Foster Care home to pay for room, board and services. Recipients are allowed to keep an amount called the AG Personal Allowance. (See Auxiliary Grants and Employment to see how other income affects the AG payment and the amount the recipients have to spend.)

The current monthly personal allowance is $81 per month, was $75 per month before 2009, and was $70 during 2006. Prior to January 2006, the allowance was $62 for many years.

The personal allowance can be used by the resident for such things as medical co-payments, over-the-counter and non-prescription medications, prescriptions not covered by Medicaid, dental care, eyeglasses, clothing, personal toiletries, snacks and sodas, provision of a personal telephone and long-distance service, personal transportation, and activities outside of what is offered by the assisted living facility or adult foster care provider.

Regulations do not allow the personal needs allowance to be used for required recreational activities, administration of accounts, debts owed the provider for basic services, or charges for laundry that exceed $10 per month.
