Unemployment Insurance - Primary Base Period - Massachusetts

The Division of Employment and Training (DET) determines a worker’s eligibility for UI by first examining the worker’s wages during the Primary Base Period. This is the time period that is first used to calculate all unemployment insurance claims. The Primary Base Period is the last four completed calendar quarters immediately preceding the date the UI claim is effective. Wages considered are those paid to the claimant during the Primary Base Period. An employee must have earned at least 30 times his or her weekly Benefit Rate and no less than $3,000 during the Primary Base Period to meet the earnings eligibility standard for UI.

The Primary Base Period may also used in the determination of the cap for the individual’s Benefit Credit –the total amount of benefits an individual may potentially collect during the 52 weeks following the effective date of the claim.

You may be able to have your claim based on an Alternate Base Period under certain circumstances specified in the law.
