Employability Investments - Spouse

If your spouse and you both receive SSI, then your benefits are combined into one SSI benefit for the two of you as a couple.

An "employability investment" is money that your spouse spends (or saves to spend later) that will help your spouse achieve a goal that makes your spouse more employable or increases your spouse's earnings. (SSA calls this goal an "occupational goal".)

Employability investments can include investments in training, education, transportation, equipment, software, or whatever might help your spouse achieve a goal that SSA agrees will make your spouse more self-supporting.

Your spouse can include employability investments, along with work expenses (both disability related and non-disability related) in a Plan for Achieving Self Support (PASS) in order to increase your spouse's benefit amount by up to 100% of the investments and expenses. (The actual amount of benefit increase depends on many variables. Use WorkWORLD to see how your spouse's benefits will be affected.)
