SD Unemployment Insurance (UI)

Unemployment insurance provides financial assistance for persons who have lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

Unemployment insurance is financed entirely by a tax on payrolls paid by employers. To qualify for benefits you must have worked for an employer who was required to pay the tax - and you must have earned enough during your base period. (See: UI Wage Requirements and Benefit Amount.)

Finally, you must be able and available for suitable work and actively seeking work for each week you claim benefits. (You must sign up with your local Career Center.)

Filing a Claim

If you become unemployed, you may file a claim for unemployment insurance benefits by calling toll-free at 1-800-309-4232. The Call Center operates Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. (CST). Speech and hearing impaired applicants may call the Relay Service of South Dakota at 1-800-877-1113.

Your claim should be filed in the first week that you become totally or partially unemployed. A delay may cost you benefits.

Your call center representative will ask you for the following information:

·      Social Security Number; Names and addresses for all your employers for the last 18 months;

·      Dates of employment;

·      Reasons you left each job;

·      If you were employed in the military during the last 18 months, you'll be asked to mail or take a copy of your DD214 to your local Career Center; and

·      If you're not a US citizen, you'll be asked for your alien registration number.

Benefit Amounts

The benefit amount that you receive each week depends both upon your prior earnings and any earnings or employment-based payments you have during the week. (See: UI Wage Requirements and Benefit Amount.)
