In the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program), Michigan has adopted three optional standards for determining countable rental income. These methods apply to both earned rental income and unearned rental income. Households can either use these standards or use their actual expenses if they are higher than the relevant standard.
· If the rental income results from a farmland rental (i.e., renting land to someone else who is farming it), then a household may deduct 10 percent of the gross rental payment to cover expenses.
· If the rental income results from an in-home rental (i.e., renting out a part of a household's home), then a household may deduct 60 percent of the gross rental payment to cover expenses.
· If the rental income results from any other type of rental, then the household may deduct 65 percent of the gross rental payment to cover expenses.
