Qualified Disabled and Working Persons (QDWPs) - Medical Assistance - Iowa

Limited Medicaid benefits are available to persons under age 65 who had received social security disability (SSDI) benefits as disabled persons but whose benefits were discontinued because of excess income from earnings. They may continue to be disabled but no longer meet Social Security’s definition of disability because of "substantial gainful activity" (SGA).

Medicaid pays the Medicare Part A premium if:

·        You are under age 65.

·        You were previously entitled to extended Medicare benefits without a charge after SSDI cash benefits ended due to your engaging in SGA.

·        You continue to have the same disabling condition that was the basis for receipt of SSDI, or to be a disabled qualified railroad retirement beneficiary, or to be blind.

·        You were previously entitled to extended Medicare benefits without a charge after your social security disability benefits ended due to substantial gainful activity.

·        You are not entitled to any other Medicare benefits.

·        You are eligible for and enrolled in Part A Medicare.

·        Your resources do not exceed twice the maximum allowed by the Supplemental Security Income (SSI) Program, $4,000 for an individual and $6,000 for a couple.

·        Your net countable income does not exceed 200% of the poverty level for your family size. (See Poverty Guidelines.) To determine net countable monthly income, follow SSI policies. Allow the earned and unearned income deductions.
