An individual who receives Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and who lives with an "essential spouse" is eligible for Medicaid.
"Essential spouses" are individuals whose needs were included in their spouse’s State assistance grant in December 1973. They were "grandfathered" into the SSI program and will be eligible for Medicaid as long as they continue to be qualified as an "essential spouse":
· Both the essential spouse and the SSI eligible person with whom s/he lives must continue to meet the eligibility criteria in effect December 1973
· The essential spouse must continue to be the spouse of and live with the SSI eligible person and be essential to the well being of the other spouse
· If a man and woman who are not related by blood live in the same household, each is required to submit a statement indicating whether they hold themselves out to the community as husband and wife.
