To be financially eligible for Supplementary Security Income (SSI) you must meet all of the following three tests:
· Your resources can not exceed the SSI Resource Limit of $2,000 for an individual or $3,000 for a couple who both receive SSI;
· Your earned income can not exceed the Substantial Gainful Activity (SGA) amount; and
· Your total income (earned and unearned) must be low enough that you would receive at least $1 of SSI cash benefit.
Normally:
· If you had excess resources, you would look at the possibility of including those resources in a Plan for Achieving Self-Support (PASS).
· If you had earned income greater than the SGA amount, you would look at the possibility of including your disability-related work expenses in an Impairment Related Work Expense (IRWE). WorkWORLD calls this use of IRWE, "IRWE to Meet the SSI SGA Test". (A PASS can not be used to meet the SGA test.)
· If you had too much total income to receive at least $1 of SSI cash benefit, you would look at the possibility of using a PASS to reduce your countable income.
In some circumstances, however, you may not be able to include your disability-related work expenses in a PASS (if those expenses are not related to your achieving an approved occupational goal). In such situations, you could include your disability-related work expenses in an "IRWE for SSI Cash Benefit Eligibility".
