When a child is found truant by the school, the family’s FIP grant is reduced by 25%.
By Iowa law, children must complete sixth grade. To be eligible for FIP, applicants and participants with a child aged 5 through 13 must give the Department written authorization to exchange information with the child’s school related to the child’s school attendance.
When a child is not meeting the school’s attendance requirements and has not completed the sixth grade, the school truancy officer and Department staff must convene meetings with the child’s family and other pertinent parties in an effort to resolve the child’s nonattendance. Parties at the meetings must work out and sign a written agreement that outlines the agreed-upon steps for resolving the child’s attendance problems.
The school may find a child to be truant if:
· The child does not go to school without a good reason.
· The parent (or other caretaker) does not attend the meeting.
· Attendees at the meeting did not work out the required agreement to help the child go to school and complete sixth grade.
· The parent (or other caretaker) breaks any part of the agreement.
