Effective January 1, 2001, if your Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) or Supplemental Security Income (SSI) benefits have ended because of earnings from work, you can request reinstatement of benefits, including Medicare and Medicaid, if applicable, without filing a new application. Expedited Reinstatement (EXR) is a result of the Ticket to Work and Work Incentives Improvement Act of 1999.
You must be unable to work because of your medical condition, and it must be the same as or related to the condition you had when SSA first decided that you should receive disability benefits. You must file the request for reinstatement with Social Security within 60 months (5 years) from the month your benefits are terminated. In addition, you may receive provisional (temporary) benefits - as well as Medicare or Medicaid - for up to six months while your case is being reviewed. If you are found not disabled, these benefits would not be considered an overpayment.
NOTE: In the 2001 version of its "Red Book," the Social Security Administration (SSA) began using the term "Employment Supports" in place of "Work Incentives." See the SSA Red Book topic for additional information. The latest version of SSA's Red Book on Employment Support is available at: http://www.socialsecurity.gov/redbook/
