An "earnings record" is a record of the contributions to the Social Security Trust Fund that an individual made during his or her working lifetime. The amount of a monthly SSDI (Title II) check is based on this record.
If you receive benefits based on your own earnings, you should receive what is known as the Primary Insurance Amount (PIA) unless that amount has been decreased because you also receive Workers Compensation payments or other public disability benefits.
If you receive benefits as a spouse or child, you are eligible to receive up to 50% of the worker’s PIA. This amount plus the PIA is called the Family Maximum. The actual amount of your benefit will be dependent on the number of others receiving benefits on this same earnings record, because in most circumstances no more than the Family Maximum can be paid.
