Child Care Assistance - Overview - Oklahoma

Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS) logoChild Care Assistance is available to eligible individuals through the Family Support Services division of the Oklahoma Department of Human Services (DHS). DHS pays licensed and contracted child care providers directly to provide child care services which are safe and affordable for low income families to enable a parent(s) or caretaker(s) to participate in employment, training, or education related activities which help them become more self-supporting. Child care is also provided in certain critical situations to help prevent neglect, abuse, or exploitation of children.

Child Care Assistance covers children age infant to age 13 under the Federal Child Care and Development Fund (CCDF) block grant. Children with disabilities and children under court supervision may be eligible to receive a child care subsidy through the month they turn 19 years of age.

Quality child care services assure the parent or caretaker that each child has adequate care which affords developmental and learning experiences while the parent or caretaker is engaged in self-support activities. Assistance is approved on a full-time basis if care is needed for over four hours in a given day. If care is needed for four hours or less in a given day, child care is approved on a part-time basis.

Child Care Assistance may be provided for out-of-home or in-home care. Out-of-home care is care provided outside of the child's home for less than 24 hours. This service must be provided by licensed or permitted child care centers and family child care homes.

In-home child care arrangements are obtained only from approved in-home providers. In-home child care is considered the arrangement of choice when night-time child care is needed or when care is needed for a medically fragile child. In-home care may also be used when there is no available licensed provider in the vicinity but there is a qualified person who can provide care in the child's own home.

Families may be required to pay a portion of the cost of child care based on household income. Click here to see DHS Child Care Eligibility/Rates Schedule. (Requires Acrobat Reader)
