Alternative Housing Voucher Program (AHVP) - Household - Massachusetts

A household for the Alternative Housing Voucher Program (AHVP) consists of two or more persons who live regularly in the unit as a primary residence. Their income and resources are available to meet the family's needs; and they are either related by blood, marriage, or operation of law, or have otherwise evidenced a stable family relationship.

A single individual may also be considered a household for the purposes of the AHVP.

A person is considered a member of a household if temporarily absent for reasons such as hospitalization, duty assignment, employment, school attendance in another location, or temporarily in the custody of the Department of Social Services.

A household eligible for the AHVP includes an individual with a certified disability who is under 60 and meets financial eligibility requirements for public housing.

If a household member who has signed the lease no longer occupies the unit, one or more remaining household members may be given permission to continue to occupy the unit if:

·      the departing household member is not relocating to public or assisted housing elsewhere, is current with all financial obligations to the local housing authority, and is not subject to eviction proceedings

·      the remaining household members are eligible and qualified for public housing and have resided in the housing unit for at least a year

·      at least one adult household member (or emancipated minor) applies for and signs a new lease with the local housing authority

If a household member who has signed a lease applies for the addition of a person to the household, the local housing authority determines whether the person is qualified and the augmented family is eligible and whether the unit is of appropriate size for the household.
