Your rental unit has more bedrooms than is allowed for the size of your family unit. See Family Size and Number of Bedrooms for a table of Family Size versus Number of Bedrooms.
NOTE: Your Public Housing Agency (PHA) may deviate from HUD's guidelines. If your PHA says that a different number of bedrooms is appropriate for your family size and composition, ignore WorkWORLD's Text Results concerning number of bedrooms.
Since you are participating in a Section 8 Tenant-Based Certificate (TBC) program, you are generally restricted to rental units of the appropriate size.
The PHA must issue your family a new voucher, and your family and the PHA must try to find an acceptable unit as soon as possible if:
· Your family is residing in a dwelling unit with a larger number of bedrooms than appropriate for the family unit size under the PHA subsidy standards; and
· The gross rent for the unit (sum of the Contract Rent plus any utility allowance for the unit size leased) exceeds the FMR/exception rent limit for the family unit size under the PHA subsidy standards.
The PHA must notify your family that exceptions to the subsidy standards may be granted, and the circumstances in which the grant of an exception will be considered by the PHA.
If an acceptable unit is available for rental by your family, the PHA must terminate the HAP contract in accordance with its terms. Your family may move into the new unit using the new voucher.
For more information on family size and number of bedrooms, see Changes in Family Size & Composition.
