VA Women, Infants, and Children's Program (WIC)

 

Virginia Women, Infants and Children (WIC) program logoThe Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture and is operated through local health departments and satellite and mobile clinics in Virginia. WIC helps Women, Infants, and Children get the nutrition services and foods that they need to stay healthy during times of important growth.

Health Benefits

WIC provides high-quality nutritional care and food to its participants. The program provides milk, cheese, eggs, juice, cereal, dried beans or peas, peanut butter and iron-fortified formula that supply crucial nutrients such as protein, iron, calcium, and vitamins A and C essential to maintain health.

Eligibility

The Virginia WIC Program serves low-income pregnant, lactating and postpartum women and children up to age five. To be eligible for WIC, you must:

·                    be pregnant, breastfeeding, just had a baby or have a child under 5.

·                    be a resident of Virginia.

·                    have a nutritional need (This is determined at your local WIC clinic).

Also, you must have an income at or below 185% of Federal Poverty Guidelines., or meet the adjunctive eligibility requirements.

You have adjunctive financial eligibility for WIC services if it can be documented that any of the following conditions apply:

·                    You are fully eligible to receive TANF, Medicaid, or Food Stamps.

·                    You are enrolled in the Family Access to Medical Insurance Security Plan (FAMIS) or FAMIS MOMS. Applicants enrolled in the FAMIS MOMS program do not require verification of co-pay amount or income. Applicants who are responsible for the higher FAMIS co-pay amount will have income eligibility screening procedures performed to determine if income is within WIC eligibility guidelines.

·                    You are a member of a family containing a TANF recipient.

·                    You are a member of a family containing a pregnant woman or infant who is enrolled in the Medicaid or FAMIS MOMS program.

·                    You are or have a family member receiving free or reduced lunches through the National School Lunch Program.

WIC Services

WIC services include:

·                    Nutrition education

·                    Private and group sessions with a nutrition expert

·                    Free nutrition checkups

·                    Support and help with breastfeeding

·                    Referrals to other services that can help you and your family (immunizations, health care)

·                    Healthy recipes

·                    Access to healthy foods
