Central State Hospital, circa 1896
This topic provides an overview as well as contact information for the State facilities operated by the Virginia Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).
NOTE: Effective July 1, 2009 the former Virginia Department of Mental Health, Mental Retardation, and Substance Abuse Services (DMHMRSAS) changed its name to the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS).
DBHDS operates ten mental health facilities that provide a range of psychiatric, psychological, nursing, support and ancillary services. The Department's five mental retardation training centers provide residential care and training in areas such as language, self-care, independent living, socialization, and in academic skills and motor development. The Hiram W. Davis Medical Center provides medical treatment to patients and residents at State facilities.
The fifteen state mental health facilities and mental retardation training centers provide highly structured, intensive services for citizens of the Commonwealth of Virginia who have a mental illness, mental retardation or are in need of substance abuse services. (The sixteenth facility, Hiram W. Davis Medical Center, provides medical treatment to patients and residents at State facilities.) In the evolutionary movement towards a single, integrated system of care, increased emphasis has been placed on the establishment of community services and on the more effective and efficient use of state facilities. This emphasis has defined the role of state facilities as one of several resources in an overall continuum of care. Patients are initially evaluated and referred to the mental health facilities by staff from Community Services Boards (CSBs).
This information is believed to be accurate as of January 2011.
