After you file an initial claim to establish Unemployment Insurance benefits, you will be paid based on claims you file on a week-to-week basis.
You must qualify separately for each weekly payment by filing continued claims that certify to your continuing total or partial unemployment. Benefits are claimed after the claim weekends and cannot be paid in advance.
The South Carolina Employment Security Law provides for a flexible, maximum weekly benefit amount that is determined each year. An insured worker's weekly benefit amount will be approximately 50 percent of his or her average weekly wage. However, no insured worker's weekly benefit amount will be less than $20.00 nor greater than $278.00 for a maximum of 26 weeks.
The South Carolina Employment Security Commission provides a quick way to file your weekly claims by telephone. The system is named TelClaim. It also provides updated information to you and limits the number of visits you make to the claims office. You may use the telephone to claim your Unemployment Insurance weekly benefits by certifying that you have met the eligibility requirements each week. You may use TelClaim to obtain general information about whether or not a check has been issued to you.
After you have called, enter your Social Security Number and identify yourself with your Personal Identification Number (PIN). You will be given the claim week ending date to be filed. You will be asked a series of questions and you will be told how to answer the questions using the buttons on the telephone.
NOTE: If you did work during the week you are claiming, report your earnings for the week even if you have not received your pay. You may earn up to 1/4 of your weekly benefit amount with no deduction in your unemployment check. It is important you enter the amount you earned, not the amount you were paid. Failure to report your earnings may result in an overpayment. Intentional failure to report earnings can result in prosecution for fraudulently claiming unemployment benefits.
When you would like information about your claim, call the TelClaim system. After you have called the TelClaim computer and entered your Social Security Number and PIN to identify yourself, the computer will tell you whether a check has been issued. If there is a problem with your claim, it will tell you to report to the claims office. It will also remind you when you are scheduled to report for an eligibility review interview.
