Recommendation: Try using a BWE for your Spouse

Your spouse has work related expenses that are not counted as Blind Work Expenses (BWEs) . At least some of those expenses may be recovered (by increasing your combined SSI check) if you include them in a BWE.

NOTE: If your spouse can include such expenses in a PASS (that is, if the expenses could help your spouse move toward a goal that would make him or her more financially self-supporting), then your spouse may be better off including them in a PASS (until he or she reaches that goal) rather than in a BWE.

NOTE - MAXIMUM ALLOWABLE AMOUNTS:
If your spouse has no PASS: Your spouse's BWE amount can not exceed the amount of the disability-related work expense.
If your spouse has a PASS: The sum of amounts for your spouse's PASS, IRWE, and/or BWE can not exceed the sum of amounts for your spouse's employability investments and work expenses (both disability-related and others).
If you are excluding your spouse's income under the Student Earned Income Exclusion (SEIE), the amount can not exceed the amount of earned income that is not excluded, if any. This is not an SSA rule, but rather is a WorkWORLD requirement because of the way in which WorkWORLD calculates SEIE. Your spouse's actual BWE may be larger but it will not result in a higher SSI cash benefit.

"WHAT-IF?" STEPS

1.           Create a New Situation.

2.           Choose the column containing the recommendation as the column on which to base the new situation. (The new column will contain the same answers as the chosen column until you make changes.)

3.           Go to the top of the new column and enter a situation label such as "Using BWE for Spouse" if you wish.

4.           Then scroll down to the question in the Work Incentives section, " Is your spouse claiming any work expenses as Blind Work Expenses (BWEs)?" Answer, "Yes".

5.           Refer to "Text Results" for the amount you can include in the BWE.

6.            Review the Numerical or Graph Results and compare them to the Results for the previous situation.
