Impairment Related Work Expense - SSI - Spouse

If your spouse and you both receive SSI, then your benefits are combined into one SSI benefit for the two of you as a couple.

If your spouse needs to pay for certain items or services in order to be able to work, your spouse may be able to use the SSI Work Incentive (WI) called an Impairment-Related Work Expense (IRWE). The expense must, as its name implies, be related to your spouse’s impairment. It can not be an expense that any similar worker without a disability would also have (such as purchase of a uniform, or bus fares if the bus is not specifically used for disability-related transportation).

If your spouse's SSA Claims Representative agrees that the claimed work expenses can be included in an IRWE, your spouse may recover up to 50% of those expenses by increasing the SSI check up to its maximum amount. Exactly how much your SSI benefit will be raised depends on your spouse's living situation, earned and unearned income, and the amount of the IRWE.

Use WorkWORLD to see how much the SSI benefit will be raised in your spouse's specific situation.
