Spouse's Disability Related Work Expenses

If your spouse and you both receive SSI, then your benefits are combined into one SSI benefit for the two of you as a couple.

If your spouse goes to work your spouse may have expenses that your spouse would not have if not working. If any of your spouse's work expenses are caused by your spouse's disability, then your spouse's SSI benefit amount may increase by up to 50% by claiming them as Impairment Related Work Expenses, or IRWEs. (The actual amount of the benefit increase depends on many variables. Use WorkWORLD to describe "What-If?" situations and find out how your spouse's SSI benefit will be affected in your spouse's and your circumstances.)

If your spouse is blind, then your spouse's benefit amount may be increased by up to 100% of these and all of the work expenses, whether they are disability-related or not, by claiming them as Blind Work Expenses (BWEs).

If your spouse has a Plan for Achieving Self Support (PASS), then your spouse's benefit amount may increase up to 100% of all of the work expenses, whether they are disability-related or not, by including them in your spouse's PASS.
