Public Housing - Tenant Selection Priorities - Massachusetts

The local housing authority uses the following priority categories in descending order to determine the order for selecting public housing tenants from the waiting lists:

1st Priority--Persons who are homeless due to natural disasters

2nd Priority--Persons who are homeless due to public action—urban renewal actions

3rd Priority--Persons who are homeless due to public action—sanitary code enforcement

4th Priority--Persons with emergency needs (such as domestic violence victims, persons with medical emergencies, or homeless persons facing an immediate threat to their health and safety)

5th Priority--Persons living in non-permanent, transitional housing subsidized by the Alternative Housing Voucher Program (AHVP)

6th Priority--Persons who have been approved to transfer for good cause from one public housing unit to another

7th Priority--Persons who are otherwise eligible and qualified, but who do not fit in any of the first six (6) priority categories
