Every applicant for public housing completes an application form available through the local housing authority central office.
The local housing authority makes a preliminary determination of eligibility based on information on the form and also determines whether the applicant appears to be entitled to any preference or priority status.
Applicants are notified about the preliminary determination of their eligibility, and if eligible, are placed on waiting lists for placement. Applicants may put their names on more than one waiting list if they qualify for more than one program.
When an applicant’s name comes to the top of the waiting list, the housing authority contacts the individual to update application information in order to make a final determination of eligibility.
