Getting Medicare Part B

When you are covered by Medicare Part A (Hospitalization Insurance), you are given the option to purchase Medicare Part B (Supplementary Medical Insurance). The premium in 2012 is $99.90 per month for most people (see note below.) In 2011, it was $96.40 per month. It is usually deducted from your SSDI check.

For other years, the monthly premium amounts are shown in the topic Medicare Premiums, Deductibles, and Co-Insurance.

NOTE: Beginning January 1, 2007, some people with high incomes will pay a higher premium based on their modified adjusted gross income. Your monthly premium will be higher if you file an individual tax return and your annual income is more than $85,000, or if you are married (file a joint tax return) and your annual income is more than $170,000. See Medicare Part B Premiums For People With Higher Incomes for additional information.
