Florida WAGES - Work Requirements

Required Hours of Participation:

·      One-Parent Family: Each non-exempt (for exemptions see the topic Florida WAGES - Work Requirements Exemptions) adult recipient who receives Temporary Cash Assistance must participate in countable work activities (see the topic Countable Work Activities) for at least 25 hours per week. Additional hours, either countable or appropriate non-countable activities, may be required based upon the participant’s Individual Service Strategy (ISS). The individual may also voluntarily participate in additional hours, subject to the availability of funds for any needed support services. Exceptions to the 25 hours per week requirement apply to some special situations involving On-the-Job Training, Community Service Work Experience, Work Experience Combined with Education, and Work Supplementation.

·      Two Parent Families: Parents in a Two-Parent Family must participate in countable work activities for a minimum of 35 hours per week. At least 30 of the required 35 hours must be attributable to one of the following countable work activities:

o    Unsubsidized employment

o    Subsidized private or public sector employment

o    Work Experience Combined with Education

o    Community Service Work Experience

o    On-the-Job Training

o    Job Search and Job Readiness Assistance (Employment Preparation)

o    Vocational Education or Training

o    The provision of childcare services to an individual who is participating in Community Service Work Experience.

One parent may participate for all 35 hours, or both parents may share the work activity requirements. If one parent in a Two-Parent Family obtains employment and the family looses eligibility for Temporary Cash Assistance, and the other parent was participating in a work activity at the time, both parents would be eligible for Transitional Education and Training (see the topic Florida WAGES - Transitional Benefits). If one parent in the family is disabled, the family is treated as a one-parent family regarding work requirements.

·      Teen Parents: A teen parent/head of household, age 19 or younger, will be considered engaged in work for a month if the recipient maintains satisfactory attendance at a secondary school or the equivalent during the month. A teen parent/head of household also meets work requirements if he/she participates in education directly related to employment for at least a minimum of 20 hours per week.
