Florida’s Department of Children and Families determines the time limits for families to receive temporary cash assistance (TCA) from the WAGES program under the following guidelines:
· Temporary cash assistance may be provided to eligible individuals for a period of time not to exceed 24 months in any consecutive 60-month period. The time limit begins with the first month for which the family receives benefits. There is a lifetime cumulative total limit of 48 months as an adult. (NOTE: Federal law has a lifetime limit of 60 months. Florida’s law is therefore more restrictive.)
· Time limitations can be extended to 36 cumulative months in a 72 consecutive month period for any participant who:
1. Received AFDC or Temporary Cash Assistance for any 36 month period of the preceding 60 months, or
2. Is a custodial parent under the age of 24 who:
a. has not completed a high school education or equivalent or
b. had little or no work experience in the preceding year.
There is a hardship exemption from time limitations. But this does not exempt an individual from the WAGES Work Requirements. A Children and Families Public Assistance Specialist (PAS) and the WAGES Case Manager assist in determining if an exemption for hardship applies.
