VA Question: Spouse Need-Based Benefits

If your spouse receives any assistance or a benefit paid by a government agency that is based on economic need, none of your spouse's income is deemed available to you for purposes of determining your Medicaid financial eligibility.

Government benefits based on need include SSI, TANF, Veterans Affairs (VA) pensions, General Relief payments, etc., but do not include Food Stamps, fuel assistance, or any benefit based on the entire household's needs.

NOTE: The "benefits based on need" referenced above are not the same as either Assistance Based on Need (ABON) or Income Based on Need (IBON).
