There are approximately 90,000 units of State and Federally assisted public housing in Massachusetts. Public housing developments are apartments that are built and subsidized by either the State or Federal government.
The Division of Public Housing and Rental Assistance oversees the following programs through its Bureau of Asset Management:
· The Family Low Income Housing Program;
· The Elderly Low Income Housing Program; and
· Housing for People with Special Needs. There is a very small amount of public housing available to single persons.
Public housing developments are managed by local housing authorities.
Veterans and spouses, surviving spouses, dependent parents or children of a veteran, and the divorced spouses who are legal guardians of a veteran’s children are given preference in tenant selection for state-aided public housing. See the Veterans' Services - Public Housing Benefits - Massachusetts topic for additional details.
