Individual/family support services often make it possible for people with disabilities to remain in their own homes and avoid placement in more restrictive settings. The following services are available from the South Carolina Department of of Disabilities and Special Needs (DDSN), among others:
· Daycare services for children with documented developmental delays are available through the Advocates for Better Child Care (ABC) Special Needs voucher program, if total gross family income meets the ABC eligibility guidelines.
· Early intervention provides in-home service for children from birth to age 6. Service coordination is provided by a early interventionist, in accordance with an individualized family service plan.
· Respite services provide temporary care to individuals in the individual/family home, a qualified caregiver's home, regional center, or other locations.
· Stipends are available to help individuals/families afford the cost of care for an individual in their own home. Funds are available for transportation, specialized equipment, day care, recreation, and other needs.
· Rehabilitation support services are focused on helping individuals become more independent and to participate in community activities. Supports are intended to develop or restore functional abilities, build personal responsibility, and promote self-direction.
· Behavioral support services provide assistance to local Disability and Special Needs(DSN) Boards and families to locate resources in the community to serve individuals with complex, severe behavioral challenges and needs. A Behavioral Supports Technical Assistance and Training Team (BSTAT) provides consultation and training to assist families with individuals living at home so these persons can continue to live at home.
