In most cases the Assistance Unit for the determination of financial eligibility and benefit amount of General Assistance (GA) will be the same as the Family Budget Group.
If, however, a Family Budget Group does include more than one Assistance Unit, then the total of the cash benefits to the Assistance Units in the Family Budget Group can not exceed the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) Payment Standard for the size of the Family Budget Group.
Also, the resource eligibility limit of $1,000 applies to the Family Budget Group as a whole, not to the individual Assistance Units.
In GA, establish a separate assistance unit for an unrelated child living in the home of a family that is also eligible to receive a TANF or GA grant. When more than one such child resides in the home, each child will be placed in a separate assistance unit. However, children who are siblings are always considered together and will be placed in the same assistance unit. In GA, establish a separate assistance unit for an unrelated child and the adult caretaker who is also eligible to receive GA. For instance, the adult caretaker is needed in the home to care for an unrelated child under age six. There is no other person able to care for the child. Establish two separate GA assistance units; one for the caretaker and one for the child.
For GA eligible adults, include the adult and the adult's spouse if the spouse or partner also meets a condition of unemployability.
For children eligible for GA who are living with a non-relative caretaker, include the child. The caretaker may also be included if the child is under six and the caretaker is needy.
A woman who has a verified pregnancy and receives a GA check the month she delivers her child is eligible for TANF that month for herself and her child if she reports the birth to DSS, and she meets all other TANF technical and financial eligibility requirements.
