The following brief summary is intended to provide a general overview of Workers' Compensation coverage and benefits in the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. See the separate topic for help with acronyms. For further information contact your local or commonwealth Workers' Compensation Program office. This information is based on data originally provided by the U.S. Department of Labor, and is current as of August 2006.
In Puerto Rico, workers' compensation is compulsory, and no waivers are permitted. There is an exclusive state fund. Employers may not insure through private carriers, self-insurance, or through groups of employers. There is no exemption for employers with small numbers of employees.
There is no expressed provision exempting farm workers; therefore, farm workers are covered in the same manner as other workers. Sharecroppers are specifically covered.
Any domestic worker regularly employed by the same employer is covered.
Full medical benefits are provided with no time or monetary limitations.
The percentage of worker's wage paid is 66 2/3. For weekly payments, the minimum benefit amount is $100 and the maximum is $300. The maximum period of payments is 312 weeks. The maximum payable amount is $32,400.

Puerto Rico covers disfigurement that is a "Serious scar, burn, or change in physiognomy of the face, head, or neck". Benefits are a maximum of $3,000. Also covered is disfigurement of "hands or arms if not considered in determining any other compensation", up to a maximum of $1,600.
