Veterans Benefits - Retirement Benefits - South Carolina

Veterans in South Carolina are eligible for several special retirements benefits if they meet specific eligibility standards. These are briefly described below.

Credit Of State Retirement For Military Service:

A person leaving employment with the State of South Carolina for military duty may continue with the State's Retirement Program if he/she continues to make payments based on the salary he/she was receiving when employed by the State.

An employee of the State with two (2) or more years of credited service with the South Carolina Retirement System may also purchase additional credit for military service before December 31, 1975 towards his/her State retirement.

Income Tax Exemption On Retirement Pay:

Any person retired from the uniformed services or their surviving spouse is allowed an exemption from the South Carolina State Income Tax of $3,000, until age 65. At age 65 $10,000 of retirement pay is exempt.
