2-1-1 VIRGINIA is the national abbreviated dialing code for free access to health and human services information and referral (I&R). 2-1-1 is an easy-to-remember and universally recognizable number that makes a critical connection between individuals and families in need and the appropriate community-based organizations and government agencies. 2-1-1 makes it possible for people in need to navigate the complex and ever-growing maze of human services' agencies and programs by making services easier to access.
Dialing 2-1-1 connects you to a trained professional, who can listen to your situation and suggest resources using one of largest databases for health and human services information in Virginia. 2-1-1 encourages prevention and fosters self-sufficiency.
Through regional centers, information and referral services are provided through one number: 2-1-1 or you can search the statewide database online for services in your area.
Operation of 2-1-1 VIRGINIA is 24 hours per day, seven days per week, 365 days per year.
2-1-1 VIRGINIA providers include: Council of Community Services (Roanoke), Family Resource & Referral Center (Staunton), CrisisLink (Northern Virginia), The Planning Council (Norfolk), United Way of Central Virginia (Lynchburg), and United Way of Greater Richmond & Petersburg (Richmond).
The Virginia Alliance of Information & Referral Systems (VAIRS) is spearheading the 2-1-1 efforts in the Commonwealth. The Virginia Statewide Information & Referral System, the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS) and VAIRS have partnered to provide 2-1-1.

In July 2000, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) designated 2-1-1 exclusively to provide public access to information and referral for health and human services. As of November 2008, approximately 78 percent of the U.S. population has access to 2-1-1 in all or part of 48 states.
