Unemployment Insurance - SNAP (Food Stamps)

Unemployment insurance provides partial income replacement for a limited period to persons who become unemployed. Unemployment benefits are paid for a seven-day period beginning on Sunday and ending on Saturday (Monday through Sunday in New York).

The weekly benefit amount is generally about 50 percent of the amount earned while employed. Each state has a maximum benefit amount.

Benefits can be paid for up to a maximum of 26 weeks in most states, and longer in a few states. In periods of very high unemployment in individual States, benefits are payable for as many as 13 (in some states 20) additional weeks, depending on triggering rates adopted by the State, up to a maximum of 39 (or 46) weeks. These extended benefits are funded on a shared basis: approximately half from State funds and half from Federal sources.

In the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program), count the gross benefit amount as unearned income.

NOTE: In almost all cases, Unemployment Insurance payments are received weekly. To convert a weekly amount to a monthly amount, multiply by 4.3, and round to the nearest cent.
