The Railroad Retirement Act and the Railroad Unemployment Insurance Act provide protection for persons who work for railroads and certain companies closely connected with the railroad industry. Railroad annuities are paid in the event of retirement, disability, or death and are also payable to spouses, surviving spouses, children, and dependent parents. In addition, qualified workers who are ill or unemployed may receive benefits.
In the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP, formerly Food Stamp Program), the gross benefit before any deductions is counted as unearned income. Take note that the amount of the check may be less than the gross amount due to a Medicare deduction.
