You may receive Lump Sum (LS) payments made to avoid possible future proceedings under the Workers' Compensation (WC) laws. Such LS payments are subject to offset and may cause benefit reduction. LS payments include but are not limited to:
· LS instead of periodic payments
· "Commutation" of future periodic benefits
· Compromise and release agreements.
LS payments are often allocated for future or past time periods. Even though they may be received in one check, they are not generally considered as single payments for offset purposes.
Since LS payments usually replace a period of regular monthly benefits, they cause offset for the months which they replace. The time periods to which they are allocated may vary according to the type of LS payment.
If LS payments are involved consult Social Security for specific allocation information.
